The Kohl's Kiosk project.
The design of the Kiosk started by looking at who all the users of the device would be. This included customers, store associates, maintainance, cleaning staff and anyone who would come into contact with the device.
Usability and functional requirements began to dictate form. How does the user "see" the device? What are the cultural expectations?
The hardware design began to revolve around the screen and its orentation. Size of the screen for visibility, ease of use, impactful visual design of the interface.
No plastic keybords, no mice, no trackballs. Hard to clean, breakable, hard to use egonomically. This is the age of the iPhone touch interface. Sketching, studying existing designs, prototyping.
Closing in on the design. Full size foamcore mock-up.
Mechanical considerations are worked out as foamcore becomes metal.
Usability and accessibility stear hardware placement and interface design. The device was always invisioned to meet the needs of all users.
Clarifying and simplifiying all the options available. What are the users basic requierments?
Final stages with functional hardware.
The eveolution of hard prototypes.
The first prototypes appear in stores.
